TEMPORARY PAVILION FOR THE SOUND OF NAOSHIMA, 2025

2.00 meter diameter, 3.00 meter height

bronze leaves, stainless steel wire, stainless steel structure

Before the full installation is completed in 2026, we are introducing a smaller, ephemeral work: the Temporary Pavilion for the meditation workshop located on the forest slope near the main staircase to the museum. It serves as a quiet introduction into the deeper experience of ‘The Sound of Naoshima’.

The pavilion is composed of suspended bronze leaves, gently arranged in the shape of a stupa. Each leaf moves with the breeze—shimmering, shifting.

Together, they create a form that appears and disappears depending on your perspective.

Within and around the leaves, we include: a soft sound of Wind bells, a light fragrance from handmade incense, releasing a subtle, ash earthy fragrance.

So even in this small work, the three senses—sight, sound, and scent—are engaged.

It is a quiet space. A light space.

A place where form becomes immaterial—like memory, like breath, like a thought that comes and goes.

This pavilion offers a first step. A soft place to pause.

"In 'The Sound of Naoshima,' I hope to offer a moment—not just to see or hear, but to notice. To be present with nature, with time, and with silence. As in the Zen koan,

the sound of one hand clapping is not a sound to find—but a state to enter."
